THE IMAGE OF SOIL

Seeing the Invisible

RhiZones

RhiZones is an immersive XR artwork series by Joanna Hoffmann, inspired by the rhizosphere: the symbiotic network of plant roots, fungi and microorganisms. Shaped over millions of years by cooperation, diversity and interdependence, these networks bridge nature and culture. The artworks present environmental systems as living cultural archives, holding ecological memory alongside the stories of human settlement, agriculture and shifting belief systems.

The project imagines the world as a meta-rhizosphere, where each RhiZone is a node of the network and a portal for exploring it from within. Two works, RhiZone: [Bog-Land] and RhiZone: [Soil], are being developed as part of the SPIN-FERT EU research on healthy soil and peat-free substrates. They advocate for protecting wetlands and sustainable horticultural practices.
