SUMMARY:Soil Quality: The Role of Organic Fertilisers\, from Theory to Field
DESCRIPTION:Cesena\, Italy \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Friday\, March 6\, the workshop “Soil Quality: The Role of Organic-Based Fertilizers\, from Theory to Field” took place in Cesena\, Italy\, as part of the European SPIN-FERT project. The event was organized by Ri.Nova\, sponsored by Herambiente. \n\n\n\nThe technical meeting\, which was well-attended both in person and online\, highlighted strong interest in biostimulants and their applications\, while also highlighting several aspects that require further discussion and investigation. \n\n\n\nSoil quality is a fundamental lever for the future of agriculture\, ecosystem protection\, and land resilience\, but in recent decades it has been progressively compromised by intensive management practices and the effects of climate change. Soil organic matter plays a central role in countering these processes and improving soil fertility and resilience. \n\n\n\nIn particular\, through scientific contributions and the presentation of long-term case studies and applications across different crop types\, the conference offered a forum for discussion and technical-scientific updates for technicians\, agricultural sector operators\, researchers\, and public decision-makers. \n\n\n\nEligio Malusò from CREA and In Hort\, together with Maria Grazia Tommasini from Ri.Nova\, presented the possibility of considering all components of soil fertility within a soil quality index\, according to the SPIN-FERT approach. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN

SUMMARY:SPIN-FERT & Hort2theFuture – Policy Scoping Workshop
DESCRIPTION:SPIN-FERT & Hort2theFuture Invite to Policy Scoping Workshop On Tuesday\, 3 March 2026\, the Horizon Europe projects SPIN-FERT and Hort2theFuture (H2F) convened a joint Policy Scoping Workshop in Brussels (REA headquarters) to present and discuss project results related to EU policies on peat-free growing substrates and biostimulants.  \n\n\n\nBringing together representatives from SPIN-FERT consortium\, Hort2theFuture consortium\, relevant EU policy experts (e.g.\, DG AGRI\, DG ENV)\, REA\, REA External review monitors\, invited external stakeholders (industry\, organic sector\, NGOs)\, and topic experts\, the workshop aimed at:  \n\n\n\n• Reviewing  the current policy landscape and the state of play of project results \n\n\n\n• Providing  preliminary information suitable for policy recommendations \n\n\n\n• Identifying key issues and gaps to define actions relevant to policies \n\n\n\nThe programme included policy updates from EU officers\, presentations of key innovations from both projects\, and a joint discussion on opportunities for coordinated policy briefs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWorkshop report \n\n\n\nThe meeting confirmed that the operational synergy between SPIN-FERT and Hort2theFuture represents a strategic asset for effectively meeting the objectives of the topic and the overall Mission Soil. \n\n\n\nIt is our feeling that the collaboration between the two consortia has revealed a value that transcends individual project KPIs. \n\n\n\nInvolving representatives from DG AGRI in this process\, i.e. during the session\, was not only useful but necessary. The possibility of involving other DGs related to the subject (e.g. ENVI) in future similar events would provide an even better framework for the discussion and the work we carry on. The direct dialogue between institutions developing innovation and those defining the regulatory framework is suitable to avoid the risk of producing scientific and technically excellent solutions that are bureaucratically inapplicable. This exchange was therefore essential to bridge the gap between research and regulatory implementation\, favouring real-world application. \n\n\n\nSystematizing both projects’ pathways would allow for: \n\n\n\n\nstandardizing recommendations for peat-free substrates;\n\n\n\naligning technical innovations with the developments of the Fertilising Products Regulation (FPR);\n\n\n\nidentifying the regulatory gaps that still hinder the large-scale adoption of such solutions\, from both the manufacturers and farmers points of view.\n\n\n\n\nThe discussion with stakeholders and other project partners during the workshop allowed us to better understand possible options for policy recommendations. Indeed\, there is a clear sense that our scientific evidence is effectively providing a compass for future policy recommendations regarding bio-based substrates and fertilizers\, which\, however\, have to face some regulatory constraints that derive from both EU and national provisions. In this respect\, the session and workshop allowed us to acquire some additional knowledge useful to define possible technical solutions that better fit with the current legal framework and also present the issues that we face because of a lack of clear/common regulations (e.g. in case of adjuvants). \n\n\n\nWe believe that the approach of the session\, i.e. direct discussion between projects and DGs’ officers\, can help defining the scientific activity and support a better understanding of the implications that its results can have on current policies or legal frameworks\, supporting technical choices to be considered by the authority/ies when developing or modifying the provisions (e.g. in relation to the inclusion of new microbial genera under microbial biostimulants). Indeed\, besides the normal lobbying and consultation activity from/of industrial parties\, we believe that the scientific evidence can be better expressed during such kind of events/meetings and thus would welcome a kind of their “institutionalisation” among the normal dissemination activities of any project. \n\n\n\nTo maintain the proactive momentum generated in Brussels\, we have already scheduled technical meetings between the key players of both projects in the coming weeks. The objective is to define a common strategy (“the way forward”) that integrates the feedback received during the policy session and coordinates upcoming research and dissemination activities\, moving forward in a unified and synergistic direction. This is seen as a possibility of providing the EU Commission with a “common single message” based on policy recommendations derived from both projects independently\, but with a synergistic approach.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN

SUMMARY:She-nziate – CNR-ISB Open day
DESCRIPTION:SPIN_FERT by the STEM Week and the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (CNR_ISB) \n\n\n\nOn February 11\, at the Territorial Research Area of the National Research Council – Rome1 (CNR-ARRM1)\, Carmelo Cannarella (CNR-ISB) held a workshop entitled: “Phytoacoustics – Plants in Music: How to Transform Nature into Sound\,” an outreach initiative connected to a research activity exploring the relationships between plants and sound. \n\n\n\nThis workshop was part of the Open Day “She-nziate” which falls within both STEM Week and the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The Open Day featured approximately 15 activities\, including workshops\, seminars\, and demonstration sessions. \n\n\n\nInvestigating the biophysical and bioelectrical processes of the plant world and translating them into sound phenomena makes it possible to communicate science through a sensory\, interdisciplinary language that brings together biology\, physics\, technology\, art\, and listening practices. Sound thus becomes a tool for scientific inquiry\, as well as for mediation and data representation\, making often hidden phenomena audible. \n\n\n\nApproximately 100 lower secondary school students attended the event\, with about 50 participating in phytoacoustics activities\, divided into three groups. \n\n\n\nDuring the workshop\, the SPIN-FERT project’s activities were also presented\, highlighting in particular that soil is a complex living system and a fundamental prerequisite for the well-being of plants and trees. Soil itself was therefore the subject of a sonification demonstration\, contributing to a dialogue between scientific knowledge and society\, encouraging new ways of listening to the natural world and new forms of relationship between human beings and the environment. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN

SUMMARY:Breath of Soil / Memory Nexus Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Poznan\, Poland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nOn October 20th\, 2025\, students of the University of Arts in Poznań / Studio for Transdisciplinary Projects and Research participated in an interdisciplinary workshop led by Prof. Joanna Hoffmann with the assistance of Mateusz Janik. (FASSF) \n\n\n\nThe session wove together artistic inquiry and scientific perspectives within the framework of the SPIN-FERT EU project (Mission Soil). The meeting opened with an introduction to SPIN-FERT and its central mission: converting agricultural residues into innovative fertilisers and peat-free growing media. Students were also introduced to the advanced technologies used in SPIN-FERT’s research\, which collectively support soil regeneration and circular horticultural solutions. \n\n\n\nThe workshop then shifted to The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus\, a participatory art-science project that examines scent as a bridge between the hidden life of soil and \n\n\n\nThe soil sample was prepared by SPIN-FERT scientists from ENOMONDO (IT) & InHORT (PL). For the sample\, they used compost produced using an innovative method that combines waste from agri-food industries. In particular\, it included three kinds of raw materials: i)residues from wine production (grape pomace – formed of grape skin and seeds)\, after the extraction of the remaining alcohol (to produce grappa\, the famous Italian distillate)\, ii) the residues from the transformation into preservatives or frozen food of fruits (apple pomace – the peel and exhausted flesh – from the production of juices) and vegetables (tomato or other vegetable peels)\, and iii) the material obtained from pruning grape vines (shoots and vines). These raw materials\, characterised by high quality and free of plastics and other impurities\, were processed using an innovative composting technology\, enabling them to be transformed into pleasant-smelling compost.  human recollection. Participants were encouraged to reflect on smell as an often-overlooked channel of communication in natural ecosystems and in artistic practice. Discussions focused on how olfactory perception can reveal subtle processes within soil—its microbial vitality\, its temporal layers\, and its emotional impact. \n\n\n\nStudents learned that Decay—whether occurring naturally in soil or managed through composting—is the essential process by which decomposing organic matter is transformed into nutrient-rich material that supports plant growth. \n\n\n\nThe workshop resulted in the Memory Molecule no 07 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://artscience-node.com/memory-molecule-07/ \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN

SUMMARY:World Food Day 2025 – Celebrating Life\, Soil\, and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Rome\, Italy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nWorld Food Day 2025 marked a historic milestone: the 80th anniversary of both the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations. Under the global theme “Hand in hand for better food and a better future!”\, this year’s event called for international solidarity in building a more sustainable\, resilient\, and equitable food system for all. \n\n\n\nBringing together governments\, international organizations\, scientists\, and engaged citizens\, the celebration highlighted global efforts to address food insecurity\, promote environmental stewardship\, and drive innovation in agriculture\, nutrition\, and ecosystem health. \n\n\n\nAs part of the Science and Innovation Forum\, SPIN-FERT was proud to contribute to World Food Day 2025 — an inspiring celebration of life\, soil\, and sustainability. \n\n\n\nWe were honoured by the presence of the Italian Minister of Agriculture\, Food Sovereignty and Forests\, who visited our immersive installation: “Breath of Soil – Memory Nexus” — a sensory journey into the living memory of soil. \n\n\n\nOver the course of two vibrant hours\, countless visitors stopped by to explore how every soil tells a story. Through scent\, texture\, and memory\, SPIN-FERT’s installation invited guests to reflect on the emotional and ecological significance of soil\, and its essential role in sustaining life on Earth. \n\n\n\nTogether with the #CREA team\, we welcomed citizens\, students\, scientists\, and journalists from around the world to discover the often-overlooked sensory power of soil. SUMMARY:SPIN-FERT at the FAO Global Exhibition: From Seeds to Foods
DESCRIPTION:Parco di Porta Capena\, Rome\, Italy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of the FAO’s 80th anniversary celebrations and the World Food Day events\, the “From Seeds to Foods” exhibition showcased the rich traditions and innovations that shape how we grow\, share\, and enjoy food. Held at Parco di Porta Capena in Rome\, the exhibition offered visitors an informative and entertaining journey through the value chains of field crops\, horticulture\, livestock\, forestry\, and fisheries. Attendees had the opportunity to see food production technologies\, taste foods from various culinary traditions\, and engage in discussions with agrifood system experts.  \n\n\n\nSPIN-FERT was honored to participate in this landmark event\, presenting our immersive sensory installation\, “Breath of Soil – Memory Nexus”. This experience invited visitors to explore the emotional and sensory connections between soil and life on Earth. Collaborating with the CREA team\, we engaged a diverse audience—including citizens\, children\, students\, and farmers—to reflect on the vital role of soil in sustaining life. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, we facilitated a hands-on activity where participants sensorially evaluated four composts used in peat-free growing substrates. By assessing the color and intensity of nine distinct odors\, visitors contributed to developing a standardized method for the qualitative and sensorial evaluation of composts\, aimed at supporting producers in valorizing their products. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition not only celebrated the past and present of our food systems but also highlighted the importance of sustainable practices for the future. SPIN-FERT is proud to have been part of this global conversation on the future of food and agriculture. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.fao.org/seeds-to-foods/en \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN

SUMMARY:20th Doctoral Day. Doctoral Programme in Nanoscience\, Materials and Chemical Engineering. Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV)
DESCRIPTION:Tarragona\, Spain \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Annually\, the Doctoral Programme organises a day in which doctoral students have the opportunity to discuss their work and have it evaluated by a prestigious panel of experts during a poster exhibition session. Starting in 2002\, the idea of this opportunity was to open the research that is carried out in there to society to receive its feedback and critique. Since then\, the event has became a forum for exchange of ideas and knowing each other’s research\, not only between academic staff but also for visitors from Industry\, Administration or any other stockholder. We aspire to make this event a unique opportunity for all doctoral students to come together and discuss with a diversity of people not necessarily Research dedicated. Our goal is to transform this modest exhibition into an occasion that allows Academia\, Industry and Society to meet together.” \n\n\n\nhttps://etseq.urv.cat/doctoratdeq/students/doctoral-day

SUMMARY:CNR-ISB “Tuscia in Fiore 2025”
DESCRIPTION:Viterbo\, Italy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Tuscia in Fiore 2025” \n\n\n\n“Plants’ Melodies: Biodiversity Sustainability and Music from Biosignals from Plants.” \n\n\n\nCarmelo Cannarella \n\n\n\nCNR-ISB \n\n\n\n18 may 2025 \n\n\n\n“Tuscia in Fiore” is an important exhibition event held in the historic center of Viterbo\, located in the Tuscia region of Italy. The event is dedicated to showcasing the region’s rich botanical heritage\, with particular emphasis on flowers. Attracting thousands of tourists and visitors at regional\, national and international level\, it involves the participation of a large number of exhibitors and having in its programme\, a wide range of artistic and recreational activities. \n\n\n\nAs part of the event\, the Institute for Biological Systems of the National Research Council (CNR-ISB) is presenting the initiative “Plants’ Melodies: Biodiversity\, Sustainability\, and Music from Plant Biosignals.” This workshop-performance\, held by Carmelo Cannarella\, Senior Technologist at CNR-ISB\, aims to explore the theme of biodiversity through an innovative immersive experience. Utilizing the electrical conductivity (EC) of plants and trees\, bioelectrical signals are captured and converted into sound impulses. These impulses are then processed via a synthesizer to produce harmonic tones and musical compositions. The initiative is directed to foster a novel perspective about nature and biodiversity by engaging audiences through sound as well as to show how plants are true mediators between the earth and the sky. Plants in fact act as an ‘open system\,’ interconnected between the sky and the earth\, constantly subject to the influence of these two regions\, of which they become the combined expression. Many factors\, among which the characteristics and qualities of the soils – at the core of the SPIN-FERT project – play a fundamental role\, thus have a great influence on the plants’ health\, which is reflected in the electrical conductivity from which we generate these sonic biofeedbacks.

SUMMARY:"The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus" at WRO Biennale 2025
DESCRIPTION:Wrocław\, Poland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate: May 16\, 2025Location: Performing Arts Centre\, WrocławFacilitator: Prof. Joanna HoffmannAssistant: Mateusz Janik \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOverview\n\n\n\nAs part of the 21st WRO Media Art Biennale\, themed Qualia\, the workshop “The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus” offered participants an immersive exploration into the intersections of human memory\, olfactory perception\, and soil ecology. Led by multimedia artist and researcher Prof. Joanna Hoffmann\, the session was a component of the broader SPIN-FERT project under the Horizon Europe “Mission Soil” program\, aiming to enhance soil fertility and promote sustainable horticultural practices.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Experience\n\n\n\nParticipants engaged in a sensory exercise by smelling specially prepared garden soil samples provided by SPIN-FERT scientists. They were then encouraged to document spontaneous memories\, thoughts\, or emotions elicited by the scents. These personal reflections were categorised into four thematic groups and compiled into a collective poem. This poem served as the conceptual foundation for designing a 3D model of an RNA molecule—a “memory molecule” representing the intricate relationship between human experiences and soil’s biological processes.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtistic and Scientific Integration\n\n\n\nThe workshop blended art and science\, translating ephemeral human memories into tangible RNA structures. These 3D-printed models (using bio-plastic) were intended to be integrated back into the soil\, where they would naturally decompose\, symbolising the cyclical nature of memory and ecological processes. This act served as both a metaphor and a literal contribution to the soil’s nutrient cycle\, reinforcing the interconnectedness of human narratives and environmental health. \n\n\n\nAn interactive archive of the RNA structures and associated memories is accessible online\, providing a digital extension of the workshop’s themes and allowing for continued engagement with the project’s concepts . \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus” underscored the profound connections between sensory perception\, personal memory\, and ecological awareness. By engaging participants in a multisensory experience\, the workshop fostered a deeper appreciation for the subtle dialogues between humans and the environment. It highlighted the potential of interdisciplinary approaches to address pressing environmental issues\, such as soil degradation\, by cultivating empathy and understanding through artistic expression  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFurther Information: \n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Details: WRO Biennale 2025 – The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexushttps://wro2025.wrocenter.pl/en/the-breath-of-soil\n\n\n\nProject Archive: Memory Nexus Archive https://artscience-node.com/memory-nexus-archive/\n\n\n\n\nArt & Science Node: The Breath of Soil Project (https://artscience-node.com/memory-nexus/)

SUMMARY:The Breath of Soil – Memory Nexus
DESCRIPTION:Poznan\, Poland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop for art students led by Prof. Joanna Hoffmann\, ass. Mateusz Janik \n\n\n\nDate: 17.03.2025Location: University of Arts in Poznań\, Studio for Transdisciplinary Projects and Research \n\n\n\nOn March 17\, 2025\, students of the University of Arts in Poznań took part in an interdisciplinary workshop combining natural sciences with artistic exploration as part of the European project SPIN-FERT EU /Mission Soil. \n\n\n\nThe Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus is a participatory art & science project\, developed by Prof. Joanna Hoffmann (FASSF/ASN) in which scent acts as a link between soil memory and human memory. It also refers to scent as one of the basic communication tools in nature’s networks. ART PROJECTS’ WEBSITE \n\n\n\n1. Introducing SPIN-FERT and the EU Mission Soil\n\n\n\nThe workshop began with a presentation on the Horizon Europe project SPIN-FERT\, an innovative EU-funded initiative focused on sustainable agriculture. Participants were introduced to the project’s core goals: transforming agricultural by-products into high-quality fertilisers and peat-free substrates. The session also highlighted SPIN-FERT’s use of cutting-edge technologies all aimed at enhancing soil fertility and supporting circular economy principles. The presentation contextualized the workshop within the broader framework of the EU Mission Soil\, underlining the importance of healthy soil for Europe’s future. \n\n\n\n2. The Breath of Soil – Memory Nexus: Conceptual Grounding\n\n\n\nThe second part of the workshop delved into the Memory Nexus project. Participants explored the sense of smell as a sensory language and a gateway to memory by discussing how olfactory experiences can reveal hidden dimensions of soil—its living processes\, its history\, and its emotional resonance. Smell was framed as a form of knowledge and communication\, often neglected in scientific and artistic practices\, but crucial in shaping our perception of the environment. \n\n\n\n3. Sensory Encounter with Soil Samples\n\n\n\nIn collaboration with scientists from SPIN-FERT Consortium (InHORT and Enomondo) a curated composition of soil and compost sample was presented to the students for olfactory exploration. The sample carried distinct scents\, evoking biological richness and organic transformation. Participants engaged in silent\, mindful smelling sessions\, allowing them to connect deeply with the earthy materials and awaken intuitive\, memory-based responses. \n\n\n\n4. Memory Writing Session\n\n\n\nFollowing the sensory experience\, students were invited to write short texts or fragments of memories inspired by the smells. The writing session was deeply introspective and emotionally resonant. Many participants shared reflections that touched on childhood landscapes\, gardens\, family and nature. The soil became not just a physical object but a carrier of memory and emotion. \n\n\n\n5. Conclusion\n\n\n\nThe workshop concluded with a group discussion\, where students exchanged insights and impressions. Many noted how the non-visual and non-verbal experience of smell opened new pathways for creative thinking. The conversation revolved around the potential of integrating sensorial knowledge into artistic practice and environmental awareness. \n\n\n\nThe Breath of Soil – Memory Nexus workshop offered a rare opportunity to connect science\, art\, and the senses\, opening up a new space for understanding the intimate and ecological meaning of soil. Through smell\, memory\, and creativity\, students explored how the earth beneath our feet can speak—if we learn how to listen through all our senses. \n\n\n\nThe workshop served as an educational experience and a call to reimagine our relationship with the soil\, inspiring artistic inquiry and deepening environmental connections. \n\n\n\nTHE WORKSHOP RESULTED IN THE CREATION OF MEMORY MOLECULE NO 3

SUMMARY:SPIN-FERT at the 13th International Blueberry Conference
DESCRIPTION:Ożarów Mazowiecki\, Poland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 13th Blueberry Conference\, organised by Hortus Media\, took place in Ożarów Mazowiecki on 6-7 March 2025. Dr hab. Małgorzata Tartanus was invited to present a lecture on soil-feeding pests which are a major threat to blueberry plantations. Malgorzata took the opportunity to familiarise the participants with the concepts and activities of SPIN-FERT\, particularly about the research on soil health improvement and the production of peat-free growing media\, which can also support pest and disease control. Of particular interest for the audience was the goal of producing peat-free substrates also testing them on blueberry grown in pots. This aspect raised a specific interest among the participants and served to promote the discussion about the interactions of these innovative substrates and plant growth and health.
