SUMMARY:Skierniewice Festival of Flowers\, Fruits and Vegetable - INHORT
DESCRIPTION:Osada pałacowa\, Skierniewice\, Poland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEXHIBITION: SENSORY GARDENS \nin chambers of the Prymasowski Palace\n \n\n\nOn the third weekend of September\, the 47th “Flowers\, Fruits and Vegetables Festival” was held in Skierniewice. It is one of the largest cultural and trade fair events in Poland\, attracting crowds of citizens and tourists from Poland and abroad\, known for its colorful parade\, numerous accompanying events\, also organized by the National Institute of Horticultural Research (INHORT). This year\, INHORT organized a unique exhibition entitled ‘Sensory gardens in the chambers of the Primate’s Palace’\, which took place at the Institute headquarter. The exhibition was part of the celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Poland’s membership of the European Union. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development\, Czesław Siekierski\, granted his honorary patronage to it\, and together with the Marshal of the Łódzkie Region\, Joanna Skrzydlewska\, personally attended its opening. \nThe “Sensory gardens” presented how the diversity of the plants’ world can be experienced with all human senses. Eight rooms of the Primate’s Palace were arranged\, creating a space where people could enjoy the different tastes of plants and specially processed food\, the aroma of their extracts and perfume of dozens of rose varieties\, the sound of a garden and… touch of soil and substrates. \nIndeed\, SPIN-FERT prepared the special exhibition ‘The breath of the Earth’ („Tchnienie ziemi”)\, showing how soil and soil substrates can be perceived with all human senses. The smell of a soil substrate was associated to a classic tune\, thus connecting the senses of hearing and smell\, which turned into a symphony when the substrate was complemented with microbial inocula. The fractions of different soils and substrates gave the experience of touch. The color of various soils served to attract the sense of sight and was also associated to its taste (with white\, brown or black chocolate!). \nThe participants (about 6.000) took part in activities combining cultural and scientific perspectives that delighted both young and old\, including word games\, interactive presentations about soil biodiversity\, as well as a soil-inspired raffle\, receiving microbial inocula to improve soil life (prepared by INTERMAG and INHORT) or compost-based substrate to substitute peat (prepared by ENOMONDO) as gift samples. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSoil\, one of the most essential elements of life on Earth\, is not only the basis for horticultural production but also has a sensory effect on humans\, affecting their senses\, memories and emotions. As part of the exhibition Sensory Gardens\, the  SPIN-FERT team of InHORT organised a workshop related to the scent of the soil that combined scientific and cultural perspectives. \n\n\n\n\n\nGlebowe Aromaty / Soil Aroma

Funded by the European Commission under Horizon Europe\, the project aims to set new standards in soil management. The meeting began with inspiring visits to locations showcasing agritourism and advanced agricultural research. Attendees explored innovations in new variety development\, organic farming\, precision agriculture\, and sustainability. The second day featured engaging presentations on the project’s ambitious goals\, focusing on the circular economy and peat-free substrates. Key discussions included the EU mission for soil protection and the project’s robust framework for soil health. Afternoon sessions covered essential topics like coordination\, ethics\, and the roles of various work packages. Highlights included a focus on the sustainability of innovative products and advanced tools for soil quality assessment. The meeting concluded with a positive and collaborative spirit\, setting a hopeful tone for SPIN-FERT’s future. This kick-off didn’t just lay a foundation; it sparked a drive for groundbreaking sustainable soil practices across Europe. Stay tuned for more updates as SPIN-FERT leads the way toward a greener\, more sustainable future!   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPIN-FERT Project Kick-Off Meeting Highlights\n\n\n\nWe are excited to share the highlights of the SPIN-FERT project kick-off meeting\, marking the beginning of our collaborative journey towards enhancing soil health and sustainable horticultural practices across Europe. \n\n\n\nVisit to Enomondo 19th June \n\n\n\nThe meeting began with a visit to Enomondo\, aligning with the Caviro Group’s circular philosophy of converting waste into energy and natural fertilizers for agricultural use\, helping to replenish vineyards where it all begins. We then visited the facilities and experimental fields of the Rinova Group. The first day concluded with a delightful dinner at Agriturismo La Graziosa. \n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe second day\, July 20th\, featured presentations by key figures in the agriculture field. Daniela Radu discussed Horizon Europe and project support\, while Eligio Malusa introduced the SPIN-FERT structure. Steve Quarri presented the “Hort2thefuture” project focusing on wood fiber-based growing media. After lunch\, administrative topics were covered\, followed by discussions on coordination\, gender\, and ethics. Work packages 1\, 2\, and 3 leaders defined their objectives within the SPIN-FERT project. Joanna Hoffman highlighted communication and training in WP1\, Bartek Tylkowski focused on biostimulants in WP2\, and Maria Grazia Tommasini outlined agronomic testing in WP3. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n July 21st resumed with Silvia Buzzi on sustainability\, and Loredana Canfora on soil quality assessment tools. WHO? highlighted peat-free substrates’ benefits\, and Eligio Malusa wrapped up with a summary. The meeting set the stage for innovative soil management practices in Europe within the SPIN-FERT project. Stay tuned for updates on our progress!
