SUMMARY:20th Doctoral Day. Doctoral Programme in Nanoscience\, Materials and Chemical Engineering. Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV)
DESCRIPTION:Tarragona\, Spain \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Annually\, the Doctoral Programme organises a day in which doctoral students have the opportunity to discuss their work and have it evaluated by a prestigious panel of experts during a poster exhibition session. Starting in 2002\, the idea of this opportunity was to open the research that is carried out in there to society to receive its feedback and critique. Since then\, the event has became a forum for exchange of ideas and knowing each other’s research\, not only between academic staff but also for visitors from Industry\, Administration or any other stockholder. We aspire to make this event a unique opportunity for all doctoral students to come together and discuss with a diversity of people not necessarily Research dedicated. Our goal is to transform this modest exhibition into an occasion that allows Academia\, Industry and Society to meet together.” \n\n\n\nhttps://etseq.urv.cat/doctoratdeq/students/doctoral-day

SUMMARY:CNR-ISB “Tuscia in Fiore 2025”
DESCRIPTION:Viterbo\, Italy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Tuscia in Fiore 2025” \n\n\n\n“Plants’ Melodies: Biodiversity Sustainability and Music from Biosignals from Plants.” \n\n\n\nCarmelo Cannarella \n\n\n\nCNR-ISB \n\n\n\n18 may 2025 \n\n\n\n“Tuscia in Fiore” is an important exhibition event held in the historic center of Viterbo\, located in the Tuscia region of Italy. The event is dedicated to showcasing the region’s rich botanical heritage\, with particular emphasis on flowers. Attracting thousands of tourists and visitors at regional\, national and international level\, it involves the participation of a large number of exhibitors and having in its programme\, a wide range of artistic and recreational activities. \n\n\n\nAs part of the event\, the Institute for Biological Systems of the National Research Council (CNR-ISB) is presenting the initiative “Plants’ Melodies: Biodiversity\, Sustainability\, and Music from Plant Biosignals.” This workshop-performance\, held by Carmelo Cannarella\, Senior Technologist at CNR-ISB\, aims to explore the theme of biodiversity through an innovative immersive experience. Utilizing the electrical conductivity (EC) of plants and trees\, bioelectrical signals are captured and converted into sound impulses. These impulses are then processed via a synthesizer to produce harmonic tones and musical compositions. The initiative is directed to foster a novel perspective about nature and biodiversity by engaging audiences through sound as well as to show how plants are true mediators between the earth and the sky. Plants in fact act as an ‘open system\,’ interconnected between the sky and the earth\, constantly subject to the influence of these two regions\, of which they become the combined expression. Many factors\, among which the characteristics and qualities of the soils – at the core of the SPIN-FERT project – play a fundamental role\, thus have a great influence on the plants’ health\, which is reflected in the electrical conductivity from which we generate these sonic biofeedbacks.

SUMMARY:"The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus" at WRO Biennale 2025
DESCRIPTION:Wrocław\, Poland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate: May 16\, 2025Location: Performing Arts Centre\, WrocławFacilitator: Prof. Joanna HoffmannAssistant: Mateusz Janik \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOverview\n\n\n\nAs part of the 21st WRO Media Art Biennale\, themed Qualia\, the workshop “The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus” offered participants an immersive exploration into the intersections of human memory\, olfactory perception\, and soil ecology. Led by multimedia artist and researcher Prof. Joanna Hoffmann\, the session was a component of the broader SPIN-FERT project under the Horizon Europe “Mission Soil” program\, aiming to enhance soil fertility and promote sustainable horticultural practices.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Experience\n\n\n\nParticipants engaged in a sensory exercise by smelling specially prepared garden soil samples provided by SPIN-FERT scientists. They were then encouraged to document spontaneous memories\, thoughts\, or emotions elicited by the scents. These personal reflections were categorised into four thematic groups and compiled into a collective poem. This poem served as the conceptual foundation for designing a 3D model of an RNA molecule—a “memory molecule” representing the intricate relationship between human experiences and soil’s biological processes.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtistic and Scientific Integration\n\n\n\nThe workshop blended art and science\, translating ephemeral human memories into tangible RNA structures. These 3D-printed models (using bio-plastic) were intended to be integrated back into the soil\, where they would naturally decompose\, symbolising the cyclical nature of memory and ecological processes. This act served as both a metaphor and a literal contribution to the soil’s nutrient cycle\, reinforcing the interconnectedness of human narratives and environmental health. \n\n\n\nAn interactive archive of the RNA structures and associated memories is accessible online\, providing a digital extension of the workshop’s themes and allowing for continued engagement with the project’s concepts . \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus” underscored the profound connections between sensory perception\, personal memory\, and ecological awareness. By engaging participants in a multisensory experience\, the workshop fostered a deeper appreciation for the subtle dialogues between humans and the environment. It highlighted the potential of interdisciplinary approaches to address pressing environmental issues\, such as soil degradation\, by cultivating empathy and understanding through artistic expression  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFurther Information: \n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Details: WRO Biennale 2025 – The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexushttps://wro2025.wrocenter.pl/en/the-breath-of-soil\n\n\n\nProject Archive: Memory Nexus Archive https://artscience-node.com/memory-nexus-archive/\n\n\n\n\nArt & Science Node: The Breath of Soil Project (https://artscience-node.com/memory-nexus/)

SUMMARY:The Breath of Soil – Memory Nexus
DESCRIPTION:Poznan\, Poland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop for art students led by Prof. Joanna Hoffmann\, ass. Mateusz Janik \n\n\n\nDate: 17.03.2025Location: University of Arts in Poznań\, Studio for Transdisciplinary Projects and Research \n\n\n\nOn March 17\, 2025\, students of the University of Arts in Poznań took part in an interdisciplinary workshop combining natural sciences with artistic exploration as part of the European project SPIN-FERT EU /Mission Soil. \n\n\n\nThe Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus is a participatory art & science project\, developed by Prof. Joanna Hoffmann (FASSF/ASN) in which scent acts as a link between soil memory and human memory. It also refers to scent as one of the basic communication tools in nature’s networks. ART PROJECTS’ WEBSITE \n\n\n\n1. Introducing SPIN-FERT and the EU Mission Soil\n\n\n\nThe workshop began with a presentation on the Horizon Europe project SPIN-FERT\, an innovative EU-funded initiative focused on sustainable agriculture. Participants were introduced to the project’s core goals: transforming agricultural by-products into high-quality fertilisers and peat-free substrates. The session also highlighted SPIN-FERT’s use of cutting-edge technologies all aimed at enhancing soil fertility and supporting circular economy principles. The presentation contextualized the workshop within the broader framework of the EU Mission Soil\, underlining the importance of healthy soil for Europe’s future. \n\n\n\n2. The Breath of Soil – Memory Nexus: Conceptual Grounding\n\n\n\nThe second part of the workshop delved into the Memory Nexus project. Participants explored the sense of smell as a sensory language and a gateway to memory by discussing how olfactory experiences can reveal hidden dimensions of soil—its living processes\, its history\, and its emotional resonance. Smell was framed as a form of knowledge and communication\, often neglected in scientific and artistic practices\, but crucial in shaping our perception of the environment. \n\n\n\n3. Sensory Encounter with Soil Samples\n\n\n\nIn collaboration with scientists from SPIN-FERT Consortium (InHORT and Enomondo) a curated composition of soil and compost sample was presented to the students for olfactory exploration. The sample carried distinct scents\, evoking biological richness and organic transformation. Participants engaged in silent\, mindful smelling sessions\, allowing them to connect deeply with the earthy materials and awaken intuitive\, memory-based responses. \n\n\n\n4. Memory Writing Session\n\n\n\nFollowing the sensory experience\, students were invited to write short texts or fragments of memories inspired by the smells. The writing session was deeply introspective and emotionally resonant. Many participants shared reflections that touched on childhood landscapes\, gardens\, family and nature. The soil became not just a physical object but a carrier of memory and emotion. \n\n\n\n5. Conclusion\n\n\n\nThe workshop concluded with a group discussion\, where students exchanged insights and impressions. Many noted how the non-visual and non-verbal experience of smell opened new pathways for creative thinking. The conversation revolved around the potential of integrating sensorial knowledge into artistic practice and environmental awareness. \n\n\n\nThe Breath of Soil – Memory Nexus workshop offered a rare opportunity to connect science\, art\, and the senses\, opening up a new space for understanding the intimate and ecological meaning of soil. Through smell\, memory\, and creativity\, students explored how the earth beneath our feet can speak—if we learn how to listen through all our senses. \n\n\n\nThe workshop served as an educational experience and a call to reimagine our relationship with the soil\, inspiring artistic inquiry and deepening environmental connections. \n\n\n\nTHE WORKSHOP RESULTED IN THE CREATION OF MEMORY MOLECULE NO 3

The visit offered a unique blend of educational insights\, hands-on workshops\, and inspiring discussions on the significance of geological and ecological processes. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit to the Museum of Earth\n\n\n\nThe visit began at the Museum of Earth\, where students were introduced to the geological history of Central Europe. Through an engaging presentation and exhibits\, they gained an understanding of the dynamic transformations of the region’s environment over millennia. Key topics included the formation of rocks\, climate changes and evolution\, shedding light on the fundamental processes that shape our planet. The diversity of the museum exhibition allowed students to combine scientific phenomena with artistic inspirations and take a more personal and in-depth approach to the Earth’s natural history. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop on Peat Core Analysis with Prof. Mariusz Lamentowicz Team / Unit for the Climate Change Ecology Research\n\n\n\nFollowing the museum tour\, the students met Prof. Mariusz Lamentowicz\, head of the Climate Change Ecology Research Unit\, and his PhD students Daria Wochal and Mariusz Bąk\, who prepared a workshop for them. The session focused on a peat core extracted from the Kusowo Peatbog\, covering an impressive 1\,200 years of environmental history. \n\n\n\nDuring the workshop\, the students were introduced to: \n\n\n\n\nSample Preparation for Microscopic Observation: They learned the meticulous process of preparing peat samples\, an essential step in understanding their composition.\n\n\n\nPeat Composition Analysis: Insights were provided into the layers of peat and their reach organic composition.\n\n\n\nSpruce Amoebae as Environmental Indicators: The role of these microorganisms in reflecting historical environmental shifts was explained\, highlighting their significance in reconstructing past climates and ecosystems.\n\n\n\n\nScientists’ vivid explanation of peat cores as “history written in coal” (Prof. Lamentowicz) resonated strongly with the group. The workshop emphasised the critical importance of peat bogs and wetlands\, ecosystems that are increasingly under threat due to overexploitation and climate change. Students were fascinated by the scientific process and deeply moved by the ecological message\, fostering respect for these vulnerable habitats. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReflections and Outcomes\n\n\n\nThe workshop and museum visit were met with great enthusiasm for the interdisciplinary approach that connected science\, art\, and ecology. The exploration of the peat core\, in particular\, inspired a newfound curiosity about the intricate stories embedded in Earth’s natural resources. SUMMARY:SPIN-FERT celebrates the Italian National Day of the Tree
DESCRIPTION:Alessandria\, Italy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPIN-FERT celebrated the Italian National Day of the Tree (November 21) participating at the conference ROOTS for GROWING\, TREES – WOODS – LANDSCAPE\, and the HIDDEN PART of the PLANTS\, which was organized by the Academy of Agriculture of Turin in Alessandria\, Italy and hosted by the Fondo Ambiente Italiano\, a Foundation dedicated to the protection of the environment and Italian landscape and arts. Prof. Eligio Malusà had a talk about the “Hidden side of the plants”\, where the relations between the plants and the microbiome\, both endophytic and rhizospheric\, were presented. Reflections on the usefulness of trees and their ‘good deeds’ in favour of the environment (in particular the soil health) were also highlighted from various points of view. \n\n\n\nAt the end of the conference\, the public (about 30 persons) was engaged in a workshop organized by SPIN-FERT. The Memory Nexus artistic project was proposed and a substrate prepared by ENOMONDO\, a project partner\, was used for exploring the link between the substrate scent and the emotional aspects that it would bring to the participants\, asking them to express what memory that scent brings to mind. \n\n\n\nTo promote the project activities toward the use of peat-free substrates\, Giovanni Ferrucci\, from ENOMONDO\, provided a brief presentation of the process used by the company for producing such kind of growing substrate. Dr Ilaria Borri\, from CREA\, conducted an exercise of sensorial analysis of growing substrates. Four various substrates produced by ENOMONDO were proposed to the audience asking for an assessment of their color\, odor and texture characteristics. They were provided together with two different peat substrates\, which were considered as reference material. This exercise was for the first time proposed to non-professional users as a result of an activity of the project aiming at defining a new quality standard for peat-free substrates.  The analysis of the participants assessment will be useful to fine tune the sensorial test.

SUMMARY:IV International Organic Fruit Symposium and II International Organic Vegetable Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Warsaw\, Poland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn September 17-20\, 2024\, the 4th International Organic Fruit Symposium and the 2nd International Organic Vegetable Symposium were held in Warsaw\, organised by the Institute of Horticulture – National Research Institute and the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). The event was held under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development\, Czesław Siekierski. The symposia were officially opened by the Director of the Institute of Horticulture – National Research Institute – Prof. Dr hab. Dorota Konopacka\, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development – Mr Stefan Krajewski and the leading scientific organiser of the conference – Dr hab. Eligio Malusà\, prof. The opening ceremony was also attended by representatives of the Department of Organic Agriculture and Food Quality of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development\, Director – Mr. Marek Cieśliński and Deputy Director – Mr. Jan Golba. The symposia gathered about 100 representatives of the scientific community involved in organic farming from all over the world\, including the United States\, Argentina\, Brazil\, Japan\, India\, England\, France\, Germany\, Italy\, Turkey and Poland. The participants presented the results of their research and held fruitful discussions\, lasting until late in the evening\, on the position and future of organic farming in the world. The guests could also familiarise themselves with Polish culture and tradition. They listened to a concert featuring Fryderyk Chopin’s compositions and tasted traditional Polish dishes and products. As part of the study trip\, the participants visited two organic fruit farms: “Ekojabłonka” owned by Mr. Hubert Filipiak in Rembertów near Tarczyn and the farm of Mr. Andrzej Kazimierczak and the headquarters of the Association of Producers “Top Fruit” in Dąbrówka Stara near Błędów. They also visited the Institute of Horticulture – National Research Institute\, where they toured the Centre for Innovative and Sustainable Horticultural Technologies (CIZTO)\, the Centre for Processing Horticultural Products (CPPO)\, the Department of Horticultural Plant Breeding\, the Department of Fruit and Vegetable Storage and Processing\, the Department of Food Safety Research. In addition to the laboratory buildings\, equipment and research work carried out as part of various projects\, the exhibition “Sensory Gardens in the Chambers of the Primate’s Palace”\, prepared on the occasion of the annual Skierniewice Festival of Flowers\, Fruits and Vegetables\, made an unforgettable impression on the visitors. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n During the OrgHort 2024 Symposium in Warsaw\, Prof. Joanna Hoffmann\, chair of Art & Science Node\, member of SPIN-FERT Consortium presented the artistic project The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus\, which delves into the intricate relationship between soil and humans. Employing the sense of smell\, it explores the relationship between soil and human memory\, combining scientific\, societal\, cultural\, and personal perspectives.\nThe scent of soil is a treasure trove of knowledge about its composition and the processes that occur in it. At the same time\, it is a source of emotions and memories stored in the unfathomable layers of human memory. \nParticipants of the ORGHORT Symposium shared with us the personal memories evoked by Soil Sample N1 prepared by InHort. The memories will be archived and serve as a foundation for creating a unique model of the RNA molecule\, which will then be printed using biodegradable materials and buried in the soil. Over time\, this original “memory capsule” will disintegrate\, becoming part of the “living memory” of the soil and\, indirectly\, of the plants that will grow from it.\nread more_\n The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus
