SUMMARY:Spin-Fert at the University of Hohenheim's Open Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Stuttgart\, Germany \n\n\n\nUniversity of Hohenheim \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOn July 5\, 2025\, the University of Hohenheim welcomed the public to its annual Open Day. As part of the event\, the Spin-Fert project was presented at a joint booth with the Moor-Power project\, drawing attention to the importance of peatland protection and the development of peat alternatives in horticultural substrates. \n\n\n\nUnder the shared title “Smell\, guess\, protect: moor protection quiz meets memory nexus”\, Spin-Fert engaged visitors with a unique smell-based memory game\, designed to explore the sensory perception of different growing media. Participants were invited to smell and reflect on two contrasting substrate samples. The activity attracted broad interest: more than 130 people took part\, ranging from curious children to experienced gardeners and academics. \n\n\n\nFollowing the memory game\, visitors had the opportunity to explore a variety of peat alternatives displayed at the booth. These included different materials currently being tested or used as components in peat-free or peat-reduced substrates. The hands-on display allowed for direct comparison of texture\, structure\, and appearance\, sparking many in-depth conversations about practical use\, environmental impact\, and future potential.  \n\n\n\nAlongside Spin-Fert’s contribution\, the Moor-Power project offered a peatland quiz that challenged visitors’ knowledge on topics like climate protection\, rewetted moors\, and the use of solar energy in these sensitive ecosystems. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN

SUMMARY:SPIN-FERT at the FAO Global Exhibition: From Seeds to Foods
DESCRIPTION:Parco di Porta Capena\, Rome\, Italy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of the FAO’s 80th anniversary celebrations and the World Food Day events\, the “From Seeds to Foods” exhibition showcased the rich traditions and innovations that shape how we grow\, share\, and enjoy food. Held at Parco di Porta Capena in Rome\, the exhibition offered visitors an informative and entertaining journey through the value chains of field crops\, horticulture\, livestock\, forestry\, and fisheries. Attendees had the opportunity to see food production technologies\, taste foods from various culinary traditions\, and engage in discussions with agrifood system experts.  \n\n\n\nSPIN-FERT was honored to participate in this landmark event\, presenting our immersive sensory installation\, “Breath of Soil – Memory Nexus”. This experience invited visitors to explore the emotional and sensory connections between soil and life on Earth. Collaborating with the CREA team\, we engaged a diverse audience—including citizens\, children\, students\, and farmers—to reflect on the vital role of soil in sustaining life. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, we facilitated a hands-on activity where participants sensorially evaluated four composts used in peat-free growing substrates. By assessing the color and intensity of nine distinct odors\, visitors contributed to developing a standardized method for the qualitative and sensorial evaluation of composts\, aimed at supporting producers in valorizing their products. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition not only celebrated the past and present of our food systems but also highlighted the importance of sustainable practices for the future. SPIN-FERT is proud to have been part of this global conversation on the future of food and agriculture. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.fao.org/seeds-to-foods/en \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN

SUMMARY:Breath of Soil / Memory Nexus Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Poznan\, Poland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nOn October 20th\, 2025\, students of the University of Arts in Poznań / Studio for Transdisciplinary Projects and Research participated in an interdisciplinary workshop led by Prof. Joanna Hoffmann with the assistance of Mateusz Janik. (FASSF) \n\n\n\nThe session wove together artistic inquiry and scientific perspectives within the framework of the SPIN-FERT EU project (Mission Soil). The meeting opened with an introduction to SPIN-FERT and its central mission: converting agricultural residues into innovative fertilisers and peat-free growing media. Students were also introduced to the advanced technologies used in SPIN-FERT’s research\, which collectively support soil regeneration and circular horticultural solutions. \n\n\n\nThe workshop then shifted to The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus\, a participatory art-science project that examines scent as a bridge between the hidden life of soil and \n\n\n\nThe soil sample was prepared by SPIN-FERT scientists from ENOMONDO (IT) & InHORT (PL). For the sample\, they used compost produced using an innovative method that combines waste from agri-food industries. In particular\, it included three kinds of raw materials: i)residues from wine production (grape pomace – formed of grape skin and seeds)\, after the extraction of the remaining alcohol (to produce grappa\, the famous Italian distillate)\, ii) the residues from the transformation into preservatives or frozen food of fruits (apple pomace – the peel and exhausted flesh – from the production of juices) and vegetables (tomato or other vegetable peels)\, and iii) the material obtained from pruning grape vines (shoots and vines). These raw materials\, characterised by high quality and free of plastics and other impurities\, were processed using an innovative composting technology\, enabling them to be transformed into pleasant-smelling compost.  human recollection. Participants were encouraged to reflect on smell as an often-overlooked channel of communication in natural ecosystems and in artistic practice. Discussions focused on how olfactory perception can reveal subtle processes within soil—its microbial vitality\, its temporal layers\, and its emotional impact. \n\n\n\nStudents learned that Decay—whether occurring naturally in soil or managed through composting—is the essential process by which decomposing organic matter is transformed into nutrient-rich material that supports plant growth. \n\n\n\nThe workshop resulted in the Memory Molecule no 07 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://artscience-node.com/memory-molecule-07/ \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN

SUMMARY:She-nziate – CNR-ISB Open day
DESCRIPTION:SPIN_FERT by the STEM Week and the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (CNR_ISB) \n\n\n\nOn February 11\, at the Territorial Research Area of the National Research Council – Rome1 (CNR-ARRM1)\, Carmelo Cannarella (CNR-ISB) held a workshop entitled: “Phytoacoustics – Plants in Music: How to Transform Nature into Sound\,” an outreach initiative connected to a research activity exploring the relationships between plants and sound. \n\n\n\nThis workshop was part of the Open Day “She-nziate” which falls within both STEM Week and the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The Open Day featured approximately 15 activities\, including workshops\, seminars\, and demonstration sessions. \n\n\n\nInvestigating the biophysical and bioelectrical processes of the plant world and translating them into sound phenomena makes it possible to communicate science through a sensory\, interdisciplinary language that brings together biology\, physics\, technology\, art\, and listening practices. Sound thus becomes a tool for scientific inquiry\, as well as for mediation and data representation\, making often hidden phenomena audible. \n\n\n\nApproximately 100 lower secondary school students attended the event\, with about 50 participating in phytoacoustics activities\, divided into three groups. \n\n\n\nDuring the workshop\, the SPIN-FERT project’s activities were also presented\, highlighting in particular that soil is a complex living system and a fundamental prerequisite for the well-being of plants and trees. Soil itself was therefore the subject of a sonification demonstration\, contributing to a dialogue between scientific knowledge and society\, encouraging new ways of listening to the natural world and new forms of relationship between human beings and the environment. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN

SUMMARY:At the CNR in Montelibretti\, the “Curious by Nature” Open Day Celebrates World Nature Day
DESCRIPTION:Rome\, Italy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nOn March 3\, 4\, and 5\, 2026\, the Territorial Research Area of the National Research Council (ARRM1) in Montelibretti (Rome) open its doors to primary school students for the “Curious by Nature” Open Day\, an initiative dedicated to celebrating World Wildlife Day. \n\n\n\nDuring these three days\, children are involved in a multidisciplinary and engaging exploration of science\, technology\, innovation\, and Art & Science. Through interactive experiments\, hands-on demonstrations\, and discussions with researchers\, young participants have the opportunity to discover firsthand how scientific knowledge is created and how it contributes to the protection and enhancement of our natural heritage. \n\n\n\nThe initiative aimed at stimulating curiosity\, encouraging critical thinking\, and promoting scientific culture from primary school onward\, within a dynamic and inclusive environment. “Curious by Nature” represents a valuable opportunity to bring younger generations closer to the world of research\, showing how science and creativity can work together to interpret and understand the complexity of nature. \n\n\n\nThe Open Day is part of the outreach activities promoted by the CNR Territorial Research Area in Montelibretti\, which has long been committed to strengthening the connection between the scientific community\, schools\, and the local area. \n\n\n\nWithin this event\, CNR-ISB participates with three activities: Carmelo Cannarella (“The Secret Music of Plants”)\, Valerio Muzzini (“Discovering the Environment with Sensors”)\, and Giovanni D’Orazio (“Science and Color: Painting with the Colors of Nature”). \n\n\n\nCNR-ISB’s activities have also been designed to increase awareness of the central role of soil health for both human life and the planet — a fundamental principle that inspires the SPIN-FERT project. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN

SUMMARY:SPIN-FERT & Hort2theFuture – Policy Scoping Workshop
DESCRIPTION:SPIN-FERT & Hort2theFuture Invite to Policy Scoping Workshop On Tuesday\, 3 March 2026\, the Horizon Europe projects SPIN-FERT and Hort2theFuture (H2F) convened a joint Policy Scoping Workshop in Brussels (REA headquarters) to present and discuss project results related to EU policies on peat-free growing substrates and biostimulants.  \n\n\n\nBringing together representatives from SPIN-FERT consortium\, Hort2theFuture consortium\, relevant EU policy experts (e.g.\, DG AGRI\, DG ENV)\, REA\, REA External review monitors\, invited external stakeholders (industry\, organic sector\, NGOs)\, and topic experts\, the workshop aimed at:  \n\n\n\n• Reviewing  the current policy landscape and the state of play of project results \n\n\n\n• Providing  preliminary information suitable for policy recommendations \n\n\n\n• Identifying key issues and gaps to define actions relevant to policies \n\n\n\nThe programme included policy updates from EU officers\, presentations of key innovations from both projects\, and a joint discussion on opportunities for coordinated policy briefs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWorkshop report \n\n\n\nThe meeting confirmed that the operational synergy between SPIN-FERT and Hort2theFuture represents a strategic asset for effectively meeting the objectives of the topic and the overall Mission Soil. \n\n\n\nIt is our feeling that the collaboration between the two consortia has revealed a value that transcends individual project KPIs. \n\n\n\nInvolving representatives from DG AGRI in this process\, i.e. during the session\, was not only useful but necessary. The possibility of involving other DGs related to the subject (e.g. ENVI) in future similar events would provide an even better framework for the discussion and the work we carry on. The direct dialogue between institutions developing innovation and those defining the regulatory framework is suitable to avoid the risk of producing scientific and technically excellent solutions that are bureaucratically inapplicable. This exchange was therefore essential to bridge the gap between research and regulatory implementation\, favouring real-world application. \n\n\n\nSystematizing both projects’ pathways would allow for: \n\n\n\n\nstandardizing recommendations for peat-free substrates;\n\n\n\naligning technical innovations with the developments of the Fertilising Products Regulation (FPR);\n\n\n\nidentifying the regulatory gaps that still hinder the large-scale adoption of such solutions\, from both the manufacturers and farmers points of view.\n\n\n\n\nThe discussion with stakeholders and other project partners during the workshop allowed us to better understand possible options for policy recommendations. Indeed\, there is a clear sense that our scientific evidence is effectively providing a compass for future policy recommendations regarding bio-based substrates and fertilizers\, which\, however\, have to face some regulatory constraints that derive from both EU and national provisions. In this respect\, the session and workshop allowed us to acquire some additional knowledge useful to define possible technical solutions that better fit with the current legal framework and also present the issues that we face because of a lack of clear/common regulations (e.g. in case of adjuvants). \n\n\n\nWe believe that the approach of the session\, i.e. direct discussion between projects and DGs’ officers\, can help defining the scientific activity and support a better understanding of the implications that its results can have on current policies or legal frameworks\, supporting technical choices to be considered by the authority/ies when developing or modifying the provisions (e.g. in relation to the inclusion of new microbial genera under microbial biostimulants). Indeed\, besides the normal lobbying and consultation activity from/of industrial parties\, we believe that the scientific evidence can be better expressed during such kind of events/meetings and thus would welcome a kind of their “institutionalisation” among the normal dissemination activities of any project. \n\n\n\nTo maintain the proactive momentum generated in Brussels\, we have already scheduled technical meetings between the key players of both projects in the coming weeks. The objective is to define a common strategy (“the way forward”) that integrates the feedback received during the policy session and coordinates upcoming research and dissemination activities\, moving forward in a unified and synergistic direction. This is seen as a possibility of providing the EU Commission with a “common single message” based on policy recommendations derived from both projects independently\, but with a synergistic approach.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN

SUMMARY:Soil Quality: The Role of Organic Fertilisers\, from Theory to Field
DESCRIPTION:Cesena\, Italy \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Friday\, March 6\, the workshop “Soil Quality: The Role of Organic-Based Fertilizers\, from Theory to Field” took place in Cesena\, Italy\, as part of the European SPIN-FERT project. The event was organized by Ri.Nova\, sponsored by Herambiente. \n\n\n\nThe technical meeting\, which was well-attended both in person and online\, highlighted strong interest in biostimulants and their applications\, while also highlighting several aspects that require further discussion and investigation. \n\n\n\nSoil quality is a fundamental lever for the future of agriculture\, ecosystem protection\, and land resilience\, but in recent decades it has been progressively compromised by intensive management practices and the effects of climate change. Soil organic matter plays a central role in countering these processes and improving soil fertility and resilience. \n\n\n\nIn particular\, through scientific contributions and the presentation of long-term case studies and applications across different crop types\, the conference offered a forum for discussion and technical-scientific updates for technicians\, agricultural sector operators\, researchers\, and public decision-makers. \n\n\n\nEligio Malusò from CREA and In Hort\, together with Maria Grazia Tommasini from Ri.Nova\, presented the possibility of considering all components of soil fertility within a soil quality index\, according to the SPIN-FERT approach. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Created by ASN
