Created by Joanna Hoffmann (FASSF-ASN)  in collaboration with Andre Bartetzki (sound\, light\, programming) and Norberto Hernandez (programming)\, ORCH’IDEA transforms the delicate life cycle of an imaginative orchid into a collective interactive journey. Participants cooperate to guide the orchid through three essential stages—nutrition\, energy acquisition\, and pollination—experiencing first-hand the interdependence between plants\, soil microorganisms\, insects\, climate\, and human actions. \n\n\n\nRather than presenting ecological challenges as abstract scientific concepts\, ORCH’IDEA enables visitors to experience how healthy ecosystems depend on cooperation and to illustrate the risks posed by soil degradation\, climate change\, and the loss of ecosystem services. \n\n\n\nBy combining interactive technologies\, immersive audiovisual environments\, and scientific knowledge\, ORCH’IDEA exemplifies SPIN-FERT’s commitment to innovative science communication and public engagement. The installation encourages visitors to reflect on how sustainable soil management contributes not only to agricultural productivity but also to the resilience of entire ecosystems. \n\n\n\nPresented within the international exhibition Bedrohung / Zagrożenie / Menace\, ORCH’IDEA reaches audiences beyond the scientific community\, fostering dialogue between research\, art\, and society. DESCRIPTION:WORLD BIODIVERSITY FORUM\, DAVOS \n\n\n\nhttps://worldbiodiversityforum.org/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThe SPIN-FERT project participated in the World Biodiversity Forum 2026 in Davos\, Switzerland\, contributing to the dialogue on biodiversity\, sustainability\, and environmental stewardship through the interactive art-and-science workshop “The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus” by Prof. Joanna Hoffmann (FASSF-ASN) \n\n\n\nThe World Biodiversity Forum brings together scientists\, policymakers\, practitioners\, and civil society representatives from around the world to exchange knowledge and develop solutions for biodiversity conservation and sustainable futures. Within this international context\, SPIN-FERT presented an innovative participatory experience that connected soil science with sensory perception\, memory\, and creativity. \n\n\n\nLed by Joanna Hoffmann (Art & Science Node / FASSF)\, with a contribution from Samuel Bickel (TU Graz)\, the workshop introduced participants to the hidden world of soil biodiversity and the crucial role of microorganisms in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Participants learned about soil health challenges\, the objectives of the EU Mission Soil\, and emerging technologies for soil monitoring\, including electronic smell detectors that can analyse volatile compounds released by soil microbiomes. \n\n\n\nThe workshop invited participants to explore soil through the sense of smell. Soil samples provided by ENOMONDO as well as collected from the Congress environments\, were presented for sensory exploration\, encouraging participants to reflect on the memories\, emotions\, and associations evoked by each scent. The exercise highlighted how soil is not only a biological resource but also a cultural and emotional medium that connects people to landscapes\, places\, and personal histories. \n\n\n\nThese reflections became the basis for the collective creation of a new Memory Molecule—a collaborative molecular poem inspired by RNA\, often described as one of the fundamental molecules of life. The resulting structure captured shared memories and experiences associated with soil and biodiversity\, demonstrating how artistic methodologies can complement scientific knowledge and foster deeper engagement with environmental issues. \n\n\n\nThe newly created Memory Molecule will be added to the growing Memory Nexus Archive (https://artscience-node.com/memory-nexus-archive/)\, a digital collection documenting collective memories inspired by soil. In a later stage\, the molecule will also be produced as a biodegradable bioplastic object and returned to the soil\, symbolising the cyclical relationship between memory\, life\, and ecological processes. \n\n\n\nThe workshop demonstrated the potential of interdisciplinary approaches to address complex environmental challenges by combining scientific research\, sensory experience\, and artistic practice. By cultivating empathy\, curiosity\, and understanding\, “The Breath of Soil: Memory Nexus” encouraged participants to reflect on the often-overlooked biodiversity beneath our feet and on the importance of protecting soil as a living foundation for ecosystems\, food production\, and human well-being. \n\n\n\nApart from the workshop\, Joanna Hoffmann participated in the OASIS exhibition accompanying the Forum\, presenting her immersive VR work RhiZone: [M-Other]\, inspired by underground rhizosphere networks. SUMMARY:SPIN-FERT at the 7th National Field Days\, Poland
DESCRIPTION:Szepietowo \n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\nJune 19-21\, 2026\, Szepietowo hosted the 7th National Field Days\, organised by the Podlasie Agricultural Advisory Centre. The event brought together farmers\, advisors\, representatives of the scientific community\, and all those interested in modern and sustainable agriculture. \n\n\n\nThe National Institute of Horticultural Research (INHORT) participated in the event as part of the exhibition “From Knowledge to Innovation – Agricultural Advisory in Practice\,” organised in the Science and Advisory Zone. INHORT staff organised a horticultural knowledge competition for students and educational workshops on topics such as soil analysis and rational fertilisation\, which are related to SPIN-FERT activities. \n\n\n\nThe “Horticulture” zone featured dissemination materials and research projects with implementation potential\, SPIN-FERT. Visitors could learn about the activities carried out in the project and the innovations that are under development. DESCRIPTION:SPIN-FERT  presented the latest developments of the SPIN-FERT Horizon Europe project at the FAO Global Conference on Sustainable Plant Production and Smart Farming. \n\n\n\nPresentation by Dr Loredana Canfora from CREA focused on a key challenge for the successful adoption of microbial biofertilisers and biostimulants: how can we verify that beneficial microorganisms actually establish and persist in soil under real field conditions?  \n\n\n\nWithin SPIN-FERT\, CREA id developing aptamer-based detection tools for rapid\, selective monitoring of soil microorganisms\, with a first proof-of-concept for Bacillus subtilis\, one of the most widely used beneficial bacteria in agriculture.
